It so warms my heart when a truly loved up happy couple get married and it happens to be that they read Whimsical Wonderland Weddings too. You may also remember Holly and Tom from their adorable engagement shoot. Holly told me;
“I was (am!) an avid WWW reader! I love how no wedding featured is the same and I took loads of inspiration from the features.
It’s all love on WWW (not just wedding love!) – it’s a positive space brimming with admiration from Lou and other readers for lots of special days. It just made me really happy to see as there’s far too much negativity and criticism in the world!”
Awww that’s given me one big fat smile this morning :-) Now i am even more excited to share their wedding with you all.
Holly and Tom were married in October at The Red Barn, Surrey. In true WWW ethos they chose the things they loved for their wedding without worrying if it would fit together and wanted a relaxed and informal vibe.
Holly wore the most beautiful lace 50s style dress by Oh My Honey while Tom looked dashing in Next suit with tan shoes. Aren’t they so gorgeous?!
They tried to hand make much of their wedding themselves, crafting their own wedding rings, chutney favours and pretty stationery. I so love the amazing wild and natural looking flowers too, utter pretty.
Thanks so much to the amazing Tino & Pip Photography for sharing their photography with us today.
Names…. Holly and Tom
Wedding Date…. Saturday 6th October 2012
The Proposal…. After a couple of days away in Paris, Tom proposed in front of Notre Dame with the most beautiful Christmas tree by our side. It was a surprise, and although we talked about marriage, it hadn’t crossed my mind that it would happen there and then. My aunt lives in Paris and I know the city quite well whereas Tom had never been before. He just waited until it felt right and didn’t have a plan beforehand!
The Vision for the day…. We both agreed very early on that we wanted an informal, relaxed day with plenty of familiar faces. We didn’t have a particular vision for the style of the day and chose things like the venue and décor just based on what we liked.
The Planning process…. We got engaged in December 2011 and got married exactly 10 months later. It was the perfect amount of time for us to prepare everything – we were just so excited to get married that we didn’t believe the people who said we’d need at least a year!
Throughout the planning process we tried to do as much as we could ourselves from designing and printing our own invitations to making the chutney favours. Our absolute favourite part of the whole thing was making our wedding rings with the lovely Sue Lane in Herefordshire. We’d recommended this to anybody! The trip also made a nice getaway for us in the midst of wedding planning. During his speech Tom mentioned how much he was going to enjoy wearing a ring that I’d made for him and what an amazing experience it was. Our guests all wanted to know how we’d made them!
Budget…. We had a budget of £15,000 and came in just under.
The Venue… We didn’t know exactly what we were looking for initially, but it all fell into place once we found our venue, The Red Barn. We both felt really relaxed there and there were so many interesting things to look at! We’d looked at a few nice hotels and houses around the Richmond / Kingston area (where we live) but they were all so expensive and it meant compromising on the number of guests… which we definitely weren’t prepared to do! The fancy buildings and décor just didn’t really feel like us. I’m sure that anyone who has found their perfect venue will relate to that!
The Red Barn were absolute pros and everything went so smoothly on the day. What a lovely bunch of staff!
The Dress + Accessories….. Dress – Rosa by OhMyHoney
Finding the dress…. This was easy but difficult all at the same time! I’d always known that I wanted a 50s style dress with some sort of sleeve, which was good because I knew what I wanted…. but difficult because I knew EXACTLY what I wanted. A lot of styles I looked at weren’t quite right but Rosa was just perfect. Louise was fantastic and made the dress a bit longer for me. The petticoat was from Petticoats a Plenty and it went perfectly with the dress!
Groom’s attire… We got Tom’s suit from Next. He looked so handsome I cried in the changing rooms!
The Readings + Music…. Tom’s sister Cath and Holly’s friend from University, Laura did the readings. We had Tom’s oldest friend Steve playing the trumpet with the organist during the bridal party entrance and during the signing of the register. He was incredible!
For the first dance we chose, ‘Wonderful World’ by Sam Cooke because it’s just such a lovely song. We were initially going to have Noah and the Whale, ‘ Five Years Time’ but as it’s really upbeat and neither of us can really dance we switched a couple of days before the wedding!
Beautiful bridesmaids….. Holly’s sister Suzi and Tom’s sister Cath. We bought the dresses from Phase Eight, taking a bit of a gamble as navy blue lace dresses have been very popular recently. They both looked stunning in the dresses and I loved that they had lace sleeves to match mine! I was completely blown away when they walked into the room all done up, they looked amazing.
The Flowers… We used the Real Cut Flower Garden – look at the website and you’ll understand why! We visited Charlie whilst we were in Herefordshire making our wedding rings and loved that we saw exactly where our flowers were grown. The bouquets were just stunning and everyone commented on how ‘just picked’ all the flowers looked. As Charlie’s flowers are seasonal we didn’t know what we were going to have until about a week before the wedding. We found this really exciting and I had so much fun unpacking the flowers at the venue with my sister!
The Cake… Cheese wheel cake by Teddington Cheese – they do amazing cheese and everyone just loved it. If you love cheese more than you love cake just go for it!
So as not to deprive those with a sweet tooth, we also asked family and friends to make cakes. Our guests just helped themselves throughout the evening.
Your Photographer…. Penny and Martin (Tino & Pip Photography) were our fantastic photographers! We’d seen some of their work on a wedding blog and they just happened to be at The Red Barn’s wedding fayre on the day we confirmed our wedding date! We were blown away by their printed work and they seemed really down-to-earth, which is just up our street. Both the engagement and wedding photos are amazing and we still look at them every day. They really got on well with our family and friends on the wedding day as everyone has commented on how nice they were! Thanks so much Penny and Martin.
The Honeymoon…. A two week trip to Cuba! We had some trips and activities on our wedding gift list that guests bought us, and we just had such an amazing time. If you’re planning to go to Cuba for your honeymoon we’d definitely recommend seeing a bit more of the country than the beaches. Havana is incredible and Trinidad (in the South) is beautifully preserved. The Cubans are so friendly!
Memorable moments… Holly: Hearing the trumpet start up as I walked up the aisle and apologising to Tom when I got to the front, for being late! The speeches were brilliant, a mix of emotion, humour and embarrassing childhood tales! It was also lovely to look around during the meal and the dancing in the evening and seeing everyone enjoying themselves.
Tom: walking down the aisle as a married couple. To be doing something so amazing surrounded by all the people we care about was an unforgettable experience. No matter where I looked as we headed down the aisle, all I could see was the people we loved smiling and clapping. I’ll never forget that
Advice for other couples… You really don’t need as long as you think to plan a wedding….. that being said, make sure you plan what you need to do and when!
Don’t be worried about asking people for help. We definitely could have done this more, particularly towards the end.
Make sure you make time for each other away from the planning and don’t sweat the small stuff.
Oh, and take advice from other couples.
