Skulls and anchors were a prominent aspect of Claire and Shawn’s sweet lighthouse wedding. They married at St Mary’s Lighthouse, Whitley Bay, followed by a meal at Barca Art Café and a party in the evening at The Grand Hotel, Tynemouth.
They kept to a budget of £7000 to create a fun and intimate wedding. Claire looked super beautiful with her cropped hair and Jenny Packham hair accessory, blue glitter nails and tea length dress. Shawn went for an indigo suit from Marks and Spencers with tan brogues and looks pretty darn cool.
I love the laid back feel to their wedding, with navy elements, gorgeous blooms and an amazing wedding cake. Thanks so much to Lee Scullion for sharing his images with us this afternoon.
Names… Claire and Shawn
Wedding Date… 20th October 2012
The Proposal… Shawn gave me a piece of street art and on the back of the frame he had written a message…will you marry me.
The Vision for the Day… There wasn’t really a vision, just wanted a small intimate wedding where everybody had fun and enjoyed themselves.
The Planning Process… From the minute of the proposal we decided that we didn’t want to take years to plan a wedding and that we wanted to be married as soon as we could be. It took 2 days to plan and book the venues and then within the next three months, until the day of the wedding, we organised everything else that we needed.
Budget… There wasn’t really a budget but we wanted to keep this as low as possible. Overall total, including bride’s dress, £7,000.
Venue… St Mary’s Lighthouse, Whitley Bay, meal at Barca Art Café, Tynemouth, evening party in the Orchid Suite at The Grand Hotel, Tynemouth.
The Dress and Accessories… Lou Lou Bridal dress, Vivienne Westwood-Melissa rubber shoes in navy blue, Jenny Packham Acacia antiqued head piece, pearl encrusted clutch box bag from Coast. Jewellery family heirlooms: diamond stud earrings and white gold and diamond bracelet.
Finding the dress… I looked on line at wedding dresses to find the style I wanted. I didn’t want anything traditional and wanted something a bit quirky. I found a couple of styles and my bridesmaid took it upon herself to find the dress in local wedding shops. We went to two shops and the first dress I tried, at the first shop, was the one. This was from Wedding Essentials, Dean Street Newcastle.
Groom’s attire… Decided to go for Navy or dark blue for the men. The groom actually got an ‘indigo’ colour suit from Marks and Spencer’s, the only one that was actually a three piece suit. Shawn opted for tan Loake brogues and matching belt. Also had skull printed socks as a nod to the bride’s love of skulls.
The Readings + Music…. There were no readings as we thought that the line ‘I now pronounce you husband and wife’ was the perfect way to end the ceremony and we didn’t want a reading at all, didn’t think it necessary. Much to the disappointment of the registrar who really wanted to read a reading. The bride and groom walked into the lighthouse to an acoustic version of Maps by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
Beautiful bridesmaids….. Only one, my best friend of 21 years. She was dressed in Navy Pied a Terre slinky knot jersey dress with nude heels and snake skin clutch (bridesmaids own).
The Flowers… all flowers were from my family friend’s flower shop , Cornflower Blue, Whitley Bay. Brides Bouquet: white carnations with white cabbage flower in the centre, blue ribbon and a skull pin. Bridesmaid: small white carnation bouquet. Button holes and mothers white lilies.
The Cake… Two tier red velvet sponge cake. Decorated in blue icing with white anchor (a little nautical theme). Bride and groom skulls placed on the top.
Your Photographer…. The amazing Lee Scullion.
The Details + Decor…. There was very little decoration of the Lighthouse, only a small room. We enlisted our friend Nikki Fionda, of Fionda Furnishings, Newcastle, to put up white sheeting around the room to hide certain things. We also had white, vanilla scented candles in large glass lanterns around the room. The restaurant and hotel didn’t need any decorating.
The Honeymoon…. Alaro, Majorca. Our dear friend lent us his house, car and yacht for ten days as a wedding gift. We drove around the majority of the island and visited places that most people wouldn’t venture to. It was a ‘foodies’ paradise.
Memorable moments… The whole day and seeing people actually enjoy themselves and have a great time at a wonderful party. Oh and managing to move the dance floor by three feet. We like to dance.
Advice for other couples… You don’t need to plan a wedding for years and you definitely do not have to spend thousands and thousands of pounds to have the perfect day.
