Afternoon peeps :-) I sneaked peeked this bride over on facebook this week and you clearly loved her style. Well the wait is over… here she is.
Mathew and Sophia were married on a rainy day in April at the stunning Hedsor House, Buckinghamshire. They wanted their day to be family orientated, unfussy and reflective of them as a couple. With a nod to Sri Lankan culture, as groom Matthew’s family are from Sri Lanka and the couple met there.
Sophia looks beautiful in a custom gown, with a hint of her sweet baby bump and gorgeous bouquet. I adore the splash of pink from the bridesmaids and the cute elephant favours.
Thanks so very much to the brilliant We Not Me Collective for sharing their super photographs today.
Names…. Mathew & Sophia
Wedding Date…. Sunday 29th April 2012
The Proposal…. We were on holiday in Carnac, Brittany celebrating our 3 year anniversary. Got on our bicycles one day and found a quiet spot on a wind-swept beach to have our champagne picnic. Mathew proposed with Sophia’s grandmother’s ring which he had secretly exchanged with Sophia’s mother several months ago. [We both love being by the sea, our first date was actually on a beach – Soph walked down the aisle to a song called ‘Seaside’ by the Kooks]. Mathew also presented Sophia with a Ceylon sapphire engagement ring at their engagement party back in London.
The Vision for the day…. Above all we wanted the wedding to be intimate and family orientated. We tried to make it fairly informal, unfussy and inclusive; we certainly didn’t want to be tied into all the traditional wedding ‘trimmings’. We also wanted the wedding to reflect our interests, passions and culture. Mathew’s family are from Sri Lanka, and is also where we first met (Mathew was on a family holiday and Sophia was working out there), so it holds a special place in both of our hearts – and we wanted to reflect this somehow in the day.
The Planning process…. The planning (and budgeting) process was slightly interrupted by the discovery – 4 months into our wedding preparations – that Sophia was pregnant. We had to rethink our plans somewhat, and opted for a more low-key Sunday afternoon soiree, rather than a late-night party till you drop affair.
Budget…. Tip: keep control of the costs especially in the final few days, build in a contingency budget for last-minute unexpected expenses.
The Venue… We knew Hedsor House was the venue for us the moment we drove up the winding drive surrounded by beautiful parkland (and Highland cattle) eventually arriving at this magnificent country house set in a stunning hilltop location with far reaching views of the Chiltern valley and river Thames. It is a private house so you get the whole place to yourself for the day making it feel very intimate and personal.
The Dress + Accessories….. The dress was bespoke (to include room for a growing bump); dreamt up by Sophia, and made a reality by a very capable and talented seamstress. Dress consisted of a crepe silk fish-tail design, with gentle tulle overlayer and French lace detail (long-sleeved).
Groom’s attire… Dark blue three-piece suit by TM Lewin, ivory shirt/tie, and shiny black shoes. Also wore surprise wedding day present cufflinks made in Sri Lanka, each embedded with a Ceylon saphhire (matching the engagement ring bought for Sophia).
The Readings + Music…. Entrance music – ‘Seaside’ by the Kooks. Signing of the Register – ‘Songbird’ by Eva Cassidy + ‘Angel’ by Sumudu (both sung by Sumudu). Recessional – ‘A Liitle Help From My Friends’ by the Beatles (sung by Sumudu). First Dance (actually pressed random on our wedding playlist!) – “Touch the Sky” by Kanye West.
Beautiful bridesmaids….. Two grown-up bridesmaids, wearing dusky raspberry pink Isabella dress (Reiss). Two small flower girls in ivory.
The Flowers… Simple and (we hoped) elegant: Callia lilies for the reception;
The Cake… A two-tiered team effort, made by our mothers. The top-tier has been saved for the Christening in anticipation of our bump’s arrival in early August.
Your Photographer…. Tom from (www.wenotmecollective.com) – who went above and beyond coping with the unfavourable weather conditions and bad light. Tom’s style fitted with our desire to avoid a long list of formal family portraits preferring a more casual/natural ‘reportage’ approach.
The Details + Decor…. On a work trip to Cambodia Sophia came across beautiful handmade fabric elephants in assorted colours and decided to buy 100 as wedding favours. We then wrote out guest names on luggage tags and tied to an elephant which was placed on the relevant plate at the reception dinner.
The Honeymoon…. Gozo (Malta) – two weeks of indulging in ‘bugger all’ at a luxury 5 star spa hotel in the small hamlet of Ta Cenc.
Memorable moments… …Being mesmerised by the angelic voice of singer/songwriter Sumudu performing a cover of “Songbird” (Eva Cassidy), during the signing of the register.…the groom breaking out into dance (to the Beatles, “with a little help from my friends”), as we walked back down the aisle….….having our photographs taken by Tom under the shelter of the rhododendron bushes along the Hedsor driveway as the rain poured down around us and guests streamed past in their cars on route to the reception….…being escorted into Hedsor House and welcomed by the Kandyan dancers and drummers as they performed a traditional wedding dance for us……the traditional lighting of a Sri-Lankan oil lamp, together with both sets of parents, symbolising happiness and prosperity in the marriage and welcoming everybody to the celebration……sipping pink champagne in our hotel room after the wedding ceremony, ordering room service and falling asleep together in front of Silent Witness on TV. How rock ‘n’roll we are!
Advice for other couples… Focus on the details/touches that matter most to you – then forget about getting the rest perfect. Only you will notice. Try to take the time to savour your day and take it all in. It goes so fast, and (hopefully) you only do it once.
