Modern City + DIY Yellow Spring Wedding ~ UK Wedding Blog ~ Whimsical Wonderland Weddings

It’s a brand new week, so it’s time for a brand new wedding… and today’s wedding is a pretty special one.

Quite often DIY weddings tend to fall under a more rustic feel, but today’s wedding is fresh, modern and bright.

Alan and Jennifer were married in March at The City Halls, Recital Room, Candleriggs, Glasgow. They wanted their wedding to be modern, with a reflection of their architect backgrounds. They chose a striking and fun yellow colour scheme, and crafted some of the amazing details of their wedding. Their wedding aisle is perhaps the most impressive i have ever seen, with some amazing floral arrangements and a frame at the end of the aisle they made themselves.

I love this gorgeous couple, get ready for some amazing inspiration lovelies :-)

Thanks so much to the amazing McBeth Photography for sharing his amazing photography with us today.

Names…. Alan and Jennifer

Wedding Date…. 31st March 2012

The Proposal….  On Jennifer’s 28th birthday. Romantic home made dinner with wishes that came true after the birthday cake candles were blown out. The ring was designed over a period of months with Alan and a specialist ring designer (Joanne MacKellar from Kalo Jewellery) to make it extra special and personal.

The Vision for the day…. Modern city centre spring wedding with hints of yellows.

The Planning process…. We tried to resource as much of the wedding locally within the city as we possibly could. If we couldn’t find something suitable or within budget then we designed and made it ourselves.

Budget….15k

The Venue…  The City Halls, Recital Room, Candleriggs, Glasgow

The Dress + Accessories…..  Catherine Deane – Leticia

Finding the dress…. Wedding shops felt very pressured and didn’t have the simple elegant dresses Jennifer was looking for. Wedding dress websites are a great source to browse in your own time.

Groom’s attire… Slaters Mensware  - Lambretta Tailored 3 piece suite with yellow tie.

The Readings + Music….  Brides Entrance – Louis Armstrong – What a Wonderful World (Played by our close friends). Signing the Register – Debussy – Clair de Lune. Bride & Grooms Exit – The Beatles – Here Come the Sun (Played by our close friends). First Dance – My Baby Just Cares for Me – Played Live (with a funky twist) by the wedding band (FNUK). Reading – Oh the Places You’ll Go – by Dr Seuss, read by the bridesman.

Beautiful bridesmaids…..  Bridesmaid: Andrea Smith (no relation) ; Dress – Courtesan Boutique.   Bridesman: Jonathan Campbell ; Attire – Slaters Mensware – Felini 3 Piece tailored suit

The Flowers…  Mood Flowers (www.moodflowers.com). Bridal Bouquet - Hand tied bouquet of yellow flowers to include alstromeria, tulips, daffodils (single and mini spray), and freesia with a light foliage collar. Stems partially bound with ivory organza ribbon and fastened with pearl pins.

Hair Flowers - Grouped wired piece of varieties (but in whites/ivories) in bridal bouquet. Bridesmaid - Smaller version of bridal bouquet but with white/ivory flowers with a touch of yellow.  Stems partially bound with ivory organza ribbon and fastened with pearl pins. Groom Buttonholes - Yellow alstromeria with simple foliage. Aisle - Cylinder vases with yellow tulips, aspsidistra and pandamues leaves at base. Signing Table - Posies of bridal bouquet flowers in three low cylinder vases at different heights with 2 groups of 3 frosted tealights. Guest Tables - Hand tied posy of yellow flowers in theme of bridal Bouquet with a touch of foliage throughout. Displayed in perspex vase with aspidistra and pandmues leaves inside.

The Cake… We designed the cake from sketches ourselves and worked closely with Top Tier Cakes to make it. (http://www.toptiercakes.co.uk). A modern simple 3 tier square white cake on a square base stand. The base layer of the cake is double depth to improve proportions to give it a taller more elegant style. Dressed with a yellow pattern and yellow sugar flower.

Your Photographer….  Craig McBeth – Ninja and photographer extraordinaire!

The Details + Decor…. As architects we were originally struck by the beautiful floral & wheel detailing in the structure of the venue and continued these themes throughout all our invites, menus, notices and cake pattern.

Favours – Hand made chocolate letters to reflect the first letter of all our guest names. Wrapped in a simple elegant white box and yellow bow (bows from Hobbycraft) with name transfer to act as a personalised name setting.
Altar Frame at end of aisle – Built in my brothers garage from standard softwood timber which we fixed 3 square white frames of varying sizes to overlap each other with floral and canvas decorations hung via fishing wire. The canvas bases were bought from Hobbycraft and we transferred a yellow butterfly pattern onto them. The yellow carnation flower balls and single tulips for the hanging glass vases were supplied by Mood Flowers.
Guest Jigsaw Puzzle – Hand made yellow perspex Jigsaw puzzle designed from CAD for our guests to write their wishes and words of wisdom for our future together. The completed puzzle will be framed and displayed in our new home. Our close friend runs his own laser cutting company (www.podbox.co.uk) and so was able to cut out hand picked perspex from our drawing. The puzzle was placed around the bar area of the venue on drawer insert CD racks from Ikea (£2!) which were cut into strips to allow the pieces to be displayed standing up.
Order of service / Menu & Wedding Invites – All hand made and designed for printing on card and laser cut out with a little help from our friends.
Promenade posters and table plan – We decided to create three massive posters of pictures of all our guests that have touched our lives and rekindle past memories. It also provided a good talking point with lots of laughs and a little of embarrassment!  One poster was full of all Jennifer’s friends & family, the other with Alan’s and the last included pictures of the both of us together as a couple from the last 6 years including all of travels and adventures with a simple table plan listed below.
The Honeymoon….  We haven’t had one yet! We are saving for a trip to Italy together.
Memorable moments…  The live music from the 9 piece band FNUK bringing everyone together to show off their funky dance moves!

Advice for other couples… Take every moment to enjoy your day together as it goes by so quickly!
