This wedding is set in the most stunning of backdrops.… the Highlands in Scotland, with spectacular views, why wouldn’t you marry outside here :-)
I love the wedding under the tree, isn’t it romantic, the tartan, the amazing reception room… the chandeliers!!! Mora and David kept their day, simple, relaxed and oh so elegant.
Thanks so much to the brilliant Scottish based wedding photographers, First Light Weddings, here is what they had to say about the day;
“Moira and David were really keen to have a relaxed, outdoor wedding with everyone enjoying themselves. We talked a lot beforehand about how they wanted the photography to be unobtrusive and just capture the ease, light and happiness of the day. Neither of them are hugely keen on having their photo taken, so we made sure to keep the formal photography to a minimum and focus on capturing all the happy moments and pretty details.
Moira and David were so nice and easy-going – they completely trusted us on the day to photograph their wedding the way they wanted it. The whole day was so happy and sunny and very relaxed – just as they had hoped for.”
Names…. Moira and David
Wedding Date…. 02/07/2011
The Proposal…. A weekend away, between Christmas and New Year, to Inverlochy Castle near Fortwilliam. David organised private dining in the library and produced a ring in between the main and dessert. The piano is the main hall stopped playing and David walked around the table and got down on one knee in front of the fire place, all kilted. Very traditional but also very romantic! It was a very white winter and everything outside was covered in snow. On the way, we had stopped next to the road so that I could take some photos. Later, David told me that he was on the cusp of proposing but realised that I would forever have to say that we got engaged on the B9918 (or whatever the road was called)!
The Vision for the day….we didn’t really have a firm vision for the day, we just wanted a relaxed day where everyone would be relaxed and comfortable.
The Planning process….we booked the venue a year in advance and then slowly booked all the other main items over the next 6 months. The details etc. were important but we didn’t want to out-source these things in bulk to the stationary maker i.e. table names etc. or caterer (flowers/food/décor etc.) so we were always thinking about other ways to present and organise details like that. It wasn’t about what would be the best, or cheapest, or most expensive – we just wanted good and reliable people who we liked and who, we thought, would help us have the kind of wedding we wanted.
The Venue… Aswanley, Huntly
The Dress + Accessories….. San Patrick ‘Elenco’ with a cathedral veil, Jenny Packham necklace and bracelet
Finding the dress…. I looked in London, Edinburgh, Perth for a dress but couldn’t quite find the ‘perfect’ dress. It was only when I went to a local shop that she found it – it was simple, but had enough detail in the lace etc. It was the only one that I found that suited the venue and the final feel for the day too.
Groom’s attire… David got a new jacket made for his kilt. He went for a brown tweed jacket and full dress kilted attire.
The Readings + Music…. We didn’t have any readings but had a string quartet for the ceremony. They played ‘chasing cars, by snow patrol for the entrance. The Huntly pipe band piped for 30 minutes in the evening – they marched down the drive and then entered the steading. Callanish did ceilidh and contemprary music during the evening.
Beautiful bridesmaids….. 4 bridesmaids who all wore one shoulder Mori Lee wedding dresses and Dune shoes. Their hair and makeup done by Lucy and Wendy of Mizo.
The Flowers… The flowers were arranged by the groom’s mother. Colours were greens whites with a touch of golden brown.
The Cake… The cake was baked and iced by the groom’s mother.
Your Photographer…. First Light photography, Edinburgh. Ditte and Chris attended all day and through the evening and both photographed during the wedding. They were amazing and very accommodating. We didn’t want to be kept for more than 15 minutes for a personal photos as we wanted to maximize our time with guests – Ditte and Chris had no issues doing that and produced lovely photos anyway!
The Details + Décor…. Invitations were designed by us and then printed by Windmill Printing; the table names were hand written luggage labels tied to a glass leaf we had bought, on the off chance we would use them; table settings were printed and then inserted into frames that, again, we had just bought and spray painted white. Our thank you cards included photos of every guest positioned under a ruined arch (it was lovely to see them and be able to give nice photos to all our friends and family)
The Honeymoon…. Paris
Memorable moments… the pipe band were by far the most memorable. They were fantastic. Other than that, our friend Chris Inglis piped us and our guests from the lawn where we got married to the steading. That walk was one of the most memorable – we have just gotten married and were marching along hand-in-hand.
Advice for other couples… Think about the feel of the day that you would like initially and plan everything around that and think about your guests in the run up, as well as yourselves – that will make you enjoy your day even more when it arrives! We also thought about what we wanted, over and above any wedding traditions probably because the last thing we wanted was a ‘production line’ wedding.
