A Yellow + Vintage Travel Themed Wedding {2} ~ UK Wedding Blog ~ Whimsical Wonderland Weddings

The portraits in this installment of today’s wedding are simply gorgeous… natural, relaxed and full of emotion.

I so love the DIY details this couple put into their wedding day, with a gorgeous vintage travel theme, incorporating maps into their décor is unique and so very chic.

Thanks so much to Trevor Wilson Silver Photography for his images today:

The Details + Décor….

In keeping with our travel theme, we used maps everywhere. My father has been archiving National Geographic magazines in our basement for as long as I can remember, and they finally got put to use for the wedding. Our seating chart was a large world map with the caption “where in the world are you sitting?” and each table was named after a country we had visited together. On the ceremony programmes we used a watermark of an antique map, and in lieu of a guestbook we supplied vintage-style postcards and asked guests to write down their favourite travel tips and “post” the cards into a small suitcase.

Memorable moments…

One of the best parts of the day was the ceilidh dance at the reception. With half of the guests from America and the other half from England, only a handful of guests had ever been to a ceilidh, but our band did a fantastic job of keeping it simple and fun. The music, spinning, stomping, and clapping kept the atmosphere lively and had people happily chatting and dancing together all night long.

Your Photographer….

Trevor Wilson of Silver Photography was our photographer extraordinaire; he braved the cold weather along with the rest of us to get some really great photos that captured the day perfectly. He didn’t take up much of our time with group photographs (just the ones we asked for), and as a result our photographs look very natural and joyful.

The Cake…

We had a tower of cupcakes from Lizzie’s Cakes, as well as a small carrot cake for cutting. The cakes were delicious and fortunately we had leftovers to take home afterwards!

Advice for other couples…

Don’t get caught up in wedding blogs to the extent that you feel like you need to reinvent the wheel with unique/funky/creative/perfect decorations. Although we spent plenty of time DIYing and scouring the internet for ideas, on the wedding day itself we were too happily distracted to notice many of the details, and they were a much smaller part of the day than we thought they would be. Months after the wedding, what our friends and family talk about is our very personal ceremony, the chaos of ceilidh dancing, and how fun and easy it was to mix with the other guests. For us, having everyone we care about come together to celebrate our marriage was what made the day special – no amount of chic décor could have done that.

The Honeymoon….

We had planned to take our honeymoon in Japan, but the tsunami struck on the morning of our wedding. Thanks to some very accommodating travel agents, we changed our plans at the last minute and instead went to Singapore, Malaysia, and Bali.

I love the travel theme aspect to this wedding. It is so interesting and is such a great conversation piece among the guests. It also represents the couple's adventerous side and how they are willing to explore the world together which I think is just beautiful.

Besides joyful partying, music and dancing, traditionally, a ceilidh includes stories which are great at wedding celebrations like a special narration of the bride and groom's love story (how they met, where they went on their first date, what they like most about each other, how he proposed, plans for the future, etc. Allyson and Martyn look like they've got beauty. I have to comment, Martyn looks really likable! From his appearance, I've got to conclude he's one of these unpretentious characters. Makes me want to like him all the more. Great post!
