A Humanist Castle Wedding + A Thousand Paper Cranes {1} ~ UK Wedding Blog ~ Whimsical Wonderland Weddings

This wedding is nothing short of adorable… this couple had the right idea in hiring a gorgeous castle for a whole week! Yes that’s right a week, a wedding party all week. Doesn’t it sound a blast!!??

I love the 1000 paper cranes this couple made and of course aren’t they just drop dead gorgeous… you are going to love this one {www}ers ;-)

Thanks so much to the amazing Edinburgh based wedding photographers, Elemental Weddings for sharing their images today, here is what they had to say about the wedding;

”We loved being part of Jacqui & Glen’s wedding – it’s been great getting to know them both over the last few months, and we were made to feel so welcome by everyone on the day.

Jacqui & Glen put their own personal stamp on everything they did, and every little detail was just beautiful. We especially loved the paper cranes, and the story behind them – I’m sure I wan’t the only one who was welling up at that part of the ceremony!

When it came to our photo time, Jacqui & Glen were totally up for all our suggestions. We had a lot of fun with the Airstream caravan, and loved that their two gorgeous dogs came out to play too!”

If you need anything else from us, just let me know.

Christina (and Jay) x

The Proposal….

Glen’s proposal ended up giving us a good laugh. We had recently been to another wedding where a lot of people were asking when our turn would be so he (rightly) thought that if he took me somewhere special I would immediately become suspicious. As it was, he proposed on a Thursday after I returned home from dropping his mum off. He tied the ring box to our dog Oscar’s collar thinking I would find it when Oscar rushed through to meet me at the door.

Unfortunately it was quite dark and I just took Oscar’s collar off (as we do every night) and threw it on the couch – ring and all. Glen had to then point out that Oscar had something for me….It was a complete surprise and I’m so glad he did it at home.

The Venue…

We held our wedding at Balbegno Castle in Fettercairn. It is a beautiful 16th Century castle which has recently been renovated and is now rented out as a holiday home. We were the first couple to be married there and knew it was perfect the moment we walked into the hall with its spectacular vaulted ceiling. When they said the dogs could also stay we were sold! We hired the property for a week and stayed there with our family and the bridal party. Most people had travelled from far away so it was wonderful to all be there together.

The Vision for the day….

We wanted a small intimate wedding surrounded by our closest friends and family. We tried to combine both Scottish and Australian aspects so held the wedding in a castle but we also wanted the day to have quite an informal feel to it so rather than a sit down meal we had gourmet finger food which is very popular in Australia.

The Dress + Accessories…..

I wore a Stewart Parvin dress and loved the classic style. My necklace and earrings were made by a lovely woman called Judith Brown who makes hand stitched wire jewellery. My mother found the necklace in a local gallery and bought it for my birthday. It was exactly what I had in mind for the wedding so I contacted Judith and she made a matching set of earrings. She also made the jewellery for the bridesmaids using blue beads rather than ivory.

I found my dress in a boutique in Edinburgh called Rachel Scott Bridal Couture that our photographer recommended. My best friend was over visiting from Australia so we went dress shopping together and I am so glad that I had her there with me. I tried on a few dresses that day but the one I chose really suited my style and I felt so elegant.

The Planning process….

We really enjoyed planning the wedding. We decided to do everything ourselves and there were a couple of big stresses however everything came together in the end.

The Flowers…

I wanted the bouquets to be both Australian and Scottish so had eucalyptus leaves and thistles along with champagne roses and white freesias. For the vases placed around the castle I bought bunches of flowers the day before the wedding and Glen’s sister and mother made them into arrangements which were absolutely beautiful.

Beautiful bridesmaids…..

Two of my closest friends from Australia and Glen’s sister were my bridesmaids. They looked beautiful in midnight blue dresses from Coast.

The Readings + Music….

Glen’s mother read a poem called Falling is Love is Like Owning a Dog by Taylor Mali. Everyone at the wedding knows how much we love our dogs so it got quite a giggle when the title was read out. My mother, along with the help of other friends and family, made 1000 paper cranes for our wedding so explained the Japanese legend of the crane and described how much love went into making each one. She also invited everyone at the wedding to make a crane before they left.

During the ceremony and drinks reception we had small pipes accompanied by guitar. The sound of the small pipes in the hall was really beautiful. For the evening we just hired PA equipment and made a playlist which was played through the computer. Guests were able to add songs and it worked out really well.

Groom’s attire…

Glen wanted to wear his family tartan so had his kilt custom made by McCalls in Aberdeen. The groomsmen’s outfits were also supplied by McCalls and we chose a tartan that complemented the colours in Glen’s kilt.
