When it comes to accessorising your dress, it can be a tricky business, especially with so much choice for brides now. So i am thrilled today to introduce the lovely Siu from Liberty in Love (a fabulous online designer wedding acessory boutique) to advise us in every possible wedding accessory we could think of {or worry over}. So, you’ve found The Dress. It’s a gorgeous number that makes you look and feel totally amazing. It flatters you in all the right places and it’s just so ‘you’. Congratulations!
Now, the fun of choosing your bridal accessories begins. But, where to start?
When I was planning my own wedding four years ago, I was totally obsessed about finding the perfect accessories that were worthy of my Big Day. Once I found my amazing Ian Stuart fitted mermaid gown in taffeta cangiante and French lace, I spent hours searching online and scouring boutiques to find The Perfect Accessories. Half a fortnight’s holiday to NYC was even spent shopping for those details for my wedding look…
These days, with so many specialist shops and fabulous online boutiques selling wedding accessories and bridal jewellery, hopefully it’s become that little bit easier to find what you’re looking for. But, as we all know, life can always be made easier! So, here’s a rundown on when to buy your accessories and a few of my top tips also thrown in for good measure…
Wedding shoes
It’s best to have your wedding shoes for your first dress fitting (usually about 6 months before your wedding) to ensure that the length of the gown is perfect. Having your shoes there for your dress fitting will also enable you to match up the colour of the shoe to your gown, especially if your shoes have a fabric upper (such as silk). There are a surprising number of different shades of ivory, so the fitting is a good opportunity to check!
From timeless classic styles to those with jewelled trims, there’s so many gorgeous shoes available at the moment. One of my favourites at the moment are these vintage-inspired styles by Freya Rose:

Like the above lovelies, do bear in mind that some shoes are dyeable too, which is great as it means that you can wear them after the big day!
Headpieces and hair accessories
Picture you on your wedding day. Are you wearing a classic tiara with a sweeping veil? Or perhaps a glamorous side headpiece with lavish detailing? Or, maybe you are thinking of a cute comb with subtle shimmer? Whatever you buy – be it vintage glamour or contemporary cool – make sure you feel beautiful and comfortable in it, and, above all, make sure you choose something that you truly love. After all, your headpiece is likely to be seen by all your guests (and be in all your photos too!).

Choosing your headpiece or hair accessories will depend on your wedding theme, your dress and, of course, your own personal style.
You should have your hair accessories to take along to your hair trial – so, about 3 months before your wedding. Don’t forget that many headpieces are made-to-order and can take up to 6 weeks to arrive. Allowing yourself plenty of time will ensure that you can take your pick from the widest number of styles available. But, if you find that you have left it much later, try not to panic! Many boutiques can usually help with urgent orders so just ask. Certain retailers (including Liberty in Love) may actually hold stock too and be able to offer next day delivery.
Jewellery
Your choice of wedding jewellery for your Big Day is very much a personal thing. And, like your headpiece or hair accessories, your wedding jewellery will depend on your theme, gown and own style.
Some designers, such as Chez Bec and Stephanie Browne design collections that include both tiaras/headpieces and jewellery, making it easy to co-ordinate your look:
If you have chosen a big statement headpiece, then a couple of understated pieces add that requisite sparkle. Vintage is a huge trend right now, and vintage-inspired jewellery lends an elegant look that is just timeless:
It’s a good idea to have your jewellery for your final dress fitting – so, about a month before. Again, if the jewellery that you love is made-to-order, ensuring that you order well in advance ensures everything runs stress-free!
Wedding lingerie and garters
OK, so you want to look and feel white-hot on your wedding day? Gorgeous bridal lingerie is what you need!
Naturally, stylishness is important, but do also remember to choose lingerie that you feel comfortable in. And, to make sure everything fits without any telltale lines, definitely try on any lingerie you buy with your dress before your big day.
Many bridal gowns are corseted provided all the support you need. So, you might actually find that you just need to think about knickers for the day itself. Finally, your garter. Forget the frilly numbers of old. There are some gorgeous designs available right now that use vintage laces and jewelled trims, that are just fab for style-loving brides! Check out designers such as Florrie Mitton and LovebySusie.
